Frequently Asked Questions
Matcha
-
Yes Haki matcha is ceremonial grade.
-
Haki matcha is made from 100% tencha which is shade grown green tea.
Our matcha is ceremonial grade and while many people get confused on the term , at Haki we consider our matcha to be ceremonial grade because :
it is made from 100% tencha
it is shade grown for up to 28 days to increase l-theanine and give it distinct bright green color
it is de-stemmed and de-veined and only the leaf pulp is used in the production of Haki matcha
it is harvested using lots of manual hours and teas are taken great care of , adding that care and appreciation for the product
-
Haki matcha has a smooth, balanced taste that sits between naturally sweet and gently vegetal. You get a rich umami start followed by a clean, mellow finish with very little bitterness.
The flavour profile is:
subtle green pea sweetness
light nutty notes like hazelnut or walnut
creamy, almost milky softness from the tea’s vegetal profile
fresh green tea character with a long smooth yet astringent finish
-
Yes — matcha is rich in antioxidants, amino acids like L-theanine, and natural caffeine. It’s known for providing calm, steady energy and focused alertness without the sharp crash often associated with coffee. Because matcha is made from whole shade-grown tea leaves, it contains more nutrients than regular green tea.
-
To prepare matcha traditionally, sift 2–3 g of matcha into a bowl, add around 30–50 ml of hot water (about 80°C), then whisk in a zig-zag motion until smooth and frothy. You can enjoy it as a traditional tea or add milk for a matcha latte.
Hojicha
-
Like any hojicha, our tea is made by roasting Japanese green tea leaves over high heat, traditionally in a porcelain pot or roasting drum. What makes haki hojicha more unique is the higher roasting temperature and the roasting process. These unique processes make our hojicha a dark roast which gives it a more nutty and roasted flavour
The roasting process also lowers the caffeine content, making Hojicha an excellent choice for people who prefer low caffeine tea.
-
Yes — hojicha does contain caffeine, but much less than matcha or most green teas. Because the tea leaves are roasted at high temperatures, the caffeine content naturally becomes lower, giving hojicha its smooth, mellow taste and making it a popular evening tea.
-
Hojicha powder is made by roasting green tea leaves at high temperatures to develop its warm, nutty flavour, then finely grinding the roasted leaves into a smooth powder. Unlike matcha, which is made from shade-grown tencha, hojicha is roasted first, giving it its distinctive toasty aroma and lower caffeine content.
-
Our hojicha comes from Kyoto, Japan from a small independent farm, grown on high hills under the Japanese sun.
-
Yes hojicha is in fact green tea. Most often made from Bancha or Kukicha leaves, which in simple terms means leaves that are harvested later in the season August/September (more mature leaves).
